Topwater bass fishin’ with frogs!

I finally had the chance to get out on a lake this past weekend and catch some quality largemouth bass. Liz was too busy with the wedding planning, so I woke up at daylight and went and tried a new lake near Butler, AL.  At daylight, this lake looked as impressive as any lake I have ever fished before, with standing timber, lily pads, and coon tail grass.  With these conditions, there is only one bait I had in mind, a topwater frog.  I began the morning fishing my frog through the lily pads and grass and within minutes landed the first bass, so I knew the technique would work.  After catching a couple, I was fishing in a creek off the main lake and caught a 6 pound 8 oz healthy bass.  Catching a fish this size on a topwater bait is an unbelievable experience and will keep you fishing topwater lures regularly. One thing I noticed this morning, is that as soon as the fog cleared off of the lake, the frog bite slowed  down and the fish just weren’t interested in it anymore. I changed to a popper and began catching fish immediately. I stayed on the lake a couple more hours and ended up catching 19 bass, all on topwater frogs and poppers. This morning was an experience I will remember for a while and I have attached a video below showing some of the highlights.

2011 Bassmaster Classic

Liz and I had a great time at the Classic. We went to the Expo and met Bill Dance, Hank Parker, Jimmy Houston, and Ray Scott the founder of B.A.S.S. We also went to the live weigh-ins at the SuperDome and watched as Kevin Van Dam put on a real show. He defeated the rest of the field by 10 pounds and broke several records including the Bassmaster Classic 3 day total weight. We also got to meet one of youtube’s finest, Ed Bassmaster. Watching all of the fishing action this weekend has us ready to get out on the lake! You can see some of the pictures below and we will be uploading a video soon.
